Tokyo Races

Horseracing in Japan is conducted on a grand scale. Huge, state of the art venues host superb racing throughout the year, most notably the big four of Tokyo, Nakayama, Kyoto and Hanshin.

Tokyo Races, inside rail All of these come under the control of the Japan Racing Association; a body committed to being at the forefront of new generation horseracing. What this means for race fans is incredible environments to enjoy the thrilling spectacle of jump and flat racing and for Tokyo races a course which has been described as the ‘racecourse of racecourses’.

Nakayama is the oldest course serving the capital city but Tokyo Racecourse is the largest and best placed and equipped for city race fans whether residents or visitors with some time to spend in Tokyo.

Along with Nakayama, it hosts the main events in Japanese racing and the two take turns in hosting races giving the people of the city boundless opportunities to enjoy all the best racing in Japan.

Built in 1933, the course has undergone an extensive seven-year period of renovations, completed in 2007 to accommodate up to 230,000 racegoers for each event.

The developments at the course have resulted in a truly world class horseracing venue with an updated main Grandstand; the Fuji View Stand and the addition of a further stand, the Memorial 60 which is located adjacent to the main stand. At the time the largest screens in the world were erected as a part of an incredible multi-screen visual experience so no racegoer can miss out on any of the Tokyo races action and race information. The latest technologies certainly enhance any time spent at the course and combine with first class facilities and hospitality to ensure a day at the races in Tokyo is uniquely enjoyable and memorable.

While course in the UK and elsewhere will often concentrate on either flat or national hunt racing, in Japan it is common to find all types of racing featured and in this respect Tokyo races are no exception.

The main turf track forms the outer oval at the course within which lies a dirt track and steeplechase track. Different start points on the turf track in tandem with running positions on the track itself allow for a great variety of races and Tokyo hosts some of the most significant Grade 1 races in Japan, including the Japan Cup, the Japanese Derby and Oaks, the Yasuda Kinen and two mile races, the NHK Mile and Victoria.

Tokyo Races, photo finish A further Grade 1 race, the February Stakes, is held on the dirt track and two important hunt races, the Autumn Jump and High Jump are hosted on the steeplechase track in October and May respectively. Year round racing is a feature of the course and so any period of time spent in Japan’s capital can incorporate some very fine Tokyo races.

The course is situated in the Fuchu district of the city and is easily accessed by public transport with stations within walking distance of all the main gates.

Live Tokyo races can be enjoyed from as little as 200 Yen and the course is also open for off-track betting on non-race days for which admission is free. Both stands offer six floors of superb facilities with options for refreshments dining and betting found on every floor.

Seating is available for nearly 14,000 people with non-reserved seats on the first four floors and reserved seating on the top two floors where the raceviews are the best. Smoking is permitted in designated areas only. Horseracing in Japan is an experience truly not to be missed and Tokyo provides the very best racing there is.
